Responsibilities

The Family and Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner provides medical services/ patient care to patients admitted to ARS facilities and throughout treatment within the continuum of care. The Family and Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner supports and follows the policies, rules, and regulations of the facility as well as the standards of State and Federal regulations.

 

Works effectively with the facility leadership team to ensure success of the facility by completing the following:

 

CORE JOB DUTIES:

  • Provides excellent medical care with the ARS philosophy outlined by the Chief Medical Officer and Medical Director. This includes the ability to establish rapport, systematically gather data, determine the readiness of an individual for treatment and change and apply accepted criteria for diagnosis of substance use disorders.
  • Screen for co-occurring mental health issues.
  • Must have knowledge of medications, assessment for medication complications, detoxification protocols and prescribing medications in general.
  • Screen for Substance Use Disorders (SUD) including psychoactive substance toxicity, intoxication, and withdrawal symptoms.
  • Screen for danger to self or others with an evidenced based assessment tool—the Columbia Suicide Screening Rating Scale (CSSRS). Analyze and interpret data to determine treatment recommendations and priorities.
  • Screen for pain and understands treatment strategies for pain including pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic approaches. Strategies should reflect an individualized approach based on the individual’s current presentation, medical judgment and the risks and benefits associated with strategies, including potential risk of dependency, addiction, and abuse.
  • Demonstrates proficiency using the electronic health record with all required documentation. ensuring compliance with all company policies and procedures, state regulation, Joint Commission standards and Medical Needs Criteria. These records will be completed and authenticated in a timely manner per policy. This includes but is not limited to the following electronic record documents:
    • Psychiatric Evaluation
    • Physical Examinations
    • Medical Progress Notes
    • Medical Discharge Summaries
    • Medication and ancillary orders
    • Understands ASAM criteria and Medical Needs Criteria provided and will document decision making and treatment planning accordingly.
    • Understands the On-Call responsibilities: will provide contact and back-up numbers, being responsive and available when assigned on-call duties.
    • Participates in continuing professional development.
    • Demonstrates adherence to accepted ethical and behavioral standards of conduct.

With the Medical Director:

  • Develops cost-effective methods to provide medically necessary therapeutic services.
  • Assists in formulating and supporting the highest standards of patient care.
  • Supervises all level of care changes and providers peer reviews when required.
  • Provides supervision/support to Nurse Practitioners, Physician Assistants and students as required.
  • Understands and abides by all safety/risk, infection control and other guidelines as required.
  • If Non-Exempt, clocks into ADP at the designated time frames.
  • Performs other tasks and duties as assigned.

Qualifications

COVID-19 Vaccination Requirement
Advanced Recovery Systems complies with state-specific COVID-19 vaccination mandates for healthcare workers. Team members in our facilities/offices located in states with vaccination mandates are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 (including any booster shots if stipulated) unless approved for a reasonable accommodation based on disability, medical condition, pregnancy, or religious belief that prevents them from being vaccinated.

 

  • Graduated from an accredited Nursing Master’s Program with a Family Nurse Practitioner or higher.
  • Must have experience in addiction medicine and behavioral health.
    Familiarity with ASAM/ ASAM Criteria and other indicated healthcare standards are necessary. Communication skills to relate to all levels of facility staff. Self-motivated and confident.
  • Licensed Nurse with Master’s Degree or higher to practice medicine, Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) and Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner in the appropriate state, as applicable, required.
  • Musthave a DEA to prescribe Controlled medications in the state(s) working. SAMHSA/ DEA Buprenorphine waiver is preferred at time of hire and will obtain within 30 days of hire. May need a protocol agreement to be completed by the NP and Medical Director.
  • Must complete DATA 2000 Waiver or Suboxone Training.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:
Knowledge of the Principles and Practices of Addiction Medicine, including Detoxification and Medication Assisted Therapy.
Adheres to the NP Healthcare code of ethics.
Knowledge of Joint Commission Standards.
Knowledge of HIPPA policies.
Demonstrates proficiency in communication and written skills.
Knowledge of State & Federal Statutes Regarding patient confidentiality, hospital regulations.
Knowledge of Drug-Free Workplace Policies.
History working with electronic medical records as well as proficiency with typing.
Time management skills.


CORE COMPETENCIES:
Required to be Demonstrated Prior to Providing Independent Care
Proficiency in the timely completion of the medical history, physical (H&P) and Psychiatric Assessment.
Proficiency in the completion of the follow-up evaluation in terms of the assessment of the present illness, continued treatment of medical and/or withdrawal symptoms, and updated treatment plan.
Must be able to type for documentation of patient care.
Ability to function as a team player and able to integrate other disciplines into the current treatment plan and patient care.
Demonstrate ability to handle any call situation while on call.
ASAM criteria, COWS and CIWAS scoring, Detoxification from Opiates, Benzodiazepines and Alcohol.
Demonstrate proficiency and knowledge of medications, assessment for medication complications, and prescribing of medications.
Use of the Electronic Health Record.
